John Adams is our third ranked president who was the the 2nd president born on October 30, 1735 in Massachusetts who was the eldest of three and was the first president to reside in the White House. Adams studied law in Harvard who became an experienced attorney and after married Abigail Smith who was his most trusted confidant and was a great influence in Adams' career. Adams had some strong issues with Britain about their laws, taxes, and their government, but he still kept a fair mind in judging them in atrial for soldiers killing five people from an unruly crowd. John helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris to settle the differences between America and Britain. Taking office in March 1797 after taking the role of vice president as a bore, he was immediately face with foreign affairs including Britain and France and he instinctively wanted a treaty. However France wanted nothing to do and demanded money, but Adams refused which started the XYZ affair known as a bribery scandal. Finally the peace treaty was signed in 1800 and Adams still frightened by possible spies passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. These acts overall made the public and Democratic-Republicans feel an oppressive government and really unconstitutional although they did have built expiration dates and they never were abused. In the re-election they really hurt Adam and cost him the election in 1800. After his term ended he continued to write columns, books, and letters and was encouraged to exchange letters with his rival Thomas Jefferson. When we ranked John Adams as the third ranked president we saw all the problems he had cause and how he couldn't even recover the people's trust in the re-election. This show us that John Adams could not even be compared to James K.Polk or James Madison as great presidents.
